Brandon Perkins, Frost 4-H fifth grader, said it takes hard work to win Grand Champion in the Market Hog division of the 59th annual Youth Expo Tuesday night, and it doesn’t hurt to have an awesome mullet as well.
This was the first year for Perkins to show.
A fellow fifth-grader, Maycie Walker of Corsicana FFA, won Reserve Grand Champion with her hog “Luke” who was unruly at first.
“He was a bad pig,” she said. “But once he got into the area, he settled down.”
Walker also won Reserve Grand Champion in Houston for her Duroc pig.
According to NCYE show records there were 213 entries in this year’s event, up from 196 hogs in 2016.
This year’s judge was Willie Kirkpatrick of Ratliff City, Oklahoma.
